Mt. Kinkoji not only offers the best hilltop view on the island, it is also the location of historical remains related to Ono-no-Takamura, a scholar and poet who was exiled to the Oki Islands in 838.
It is said that Ono-no-Takamura retired to the temple for many days to pray for his return to the capital.
He was then pardoned after having spent a year in exile.
