Kannon-iwa Rock 観音岩
beppu port 2 hr 40 min 20 min 30 min Bus Stop: Kuniga
Strong wind and waves have carved this unique rock.
People say it looks like a kannon (Buddhist Deity) and as such is named Kannon-iwa (Buddhist Deity Rock).
The local people have another name for it (Rosoku-iwa, Candle Rock).
Do not confuse this with the larger Rosoku-jima (Candle Island) in Okinoshima Town!

You can view this rock from the sea on a sightseeing boat or from the Kuniga-hama Carpark Area next to the bus stop.

Early Evening
We recommend you go back in the evening and enjoy the sunset!
Mid-April to early-June, then again from mid-August to mid-September is the best time to see the kannon glow in the sun, like a candle!
Maybe you can have a picnic on the grass and watch the sunset?
