The official name of this shrine is Amasashihiko-no-mikoto Shrine, but the local people have fondly nicknamed it Ikkū Shrine which means 'the best shrine on the island'. It is also the Ichinomiya (highest ranking shrine) of the island. There is a legend about the deity of this shrine and Ōkuninushi (Ōnamuchi), an important deity believed to have been the ruler of Izumo Province. In the shrine grounds there is the Rock Seat of Emperor Godaigo (exiled to Oki in 1332) and the Rock Seat of kengyō (adoministrator who was banished to Oki in 1674).
