Fukuura Tunnels 福浦トンネル
From Saigō Port - 70min 35min - Bus Stop: Uneri Hotel
The Fukuura Tunnels are a glimpse into way of life of generations past on these mountainous and isolated islands.

The tunnels were dug at various stages throughout history into the soft pyroclastic rock of the cliff along the coast in Fukuura. The smaller tunnels along the wave-eroded platform are large enough for a person to pass through, whilst the larger tunnel on the right was dug later and then widened for larger vehicles to pass through. You will thoroughly enjoy walking back through time and imagining a time when people used these tunnels to travel to the neighboring areas.

Also, these tunnels provide an exciting and unique opportunity to walk through the astounding terrain created by pyroclastic flow from a volcano around 6 million years ago.
