This shrine was built in 1939 to enshrine former Emperor Gotoba in commemoration of the 700th anniversary of his death.
The emperor was exiled to the Oki Islands in 1221, and lived here until his death several years later.
The main hall of Oki Shrine features a unique architectural style called Oki-zukuri.
Famous cherry blossom trees lining both sides of the approach to the shrine can be found within the spacious shrine grounds.

Nearby you can visit the Burial Site of Emperor Gotoba and the Gotoba Residence Site.
